Battery Wear Causes and Care Tips

There are a variety of factors affecting your Toyota’s battery lifespan, from how often you use your vehicle to the climate of where you live. Short frequent drives around the cold and frigid Colorado winters can cause batteries to lose their charge, wearing down the battery faster. Leaving headlights or interior lights on for an extended period of time will also cause the battery to drain, resulting in a shorter battery lifespan.

No matter your situation, your Toyota’s battery will require occasional attention. To reduce the risk of potential issues, it is essential that you test the charge of the battery, check for corrosion, and make sure the connections are clean twice a year. If you would rather not complete the bi-annual battery inspection, Groove Toyota service technicians are available to help inspect, clean, and service your battery today.

Why Do Car Batteries Deteriorate

Why Batteries Deteriorate

Your Toyota’s battery can lose its ability to hold a charge for multiple reasons, but some of the most common causes are:

  • Time: As your battery ages, it will naturally begin to wear out and lose its charge.
  • Terrain: Potholes, rough terrain, and other road conditions can loosen your battery’s hold-down clamps, resulting in the internal battery parts breaking down faster.
  • Weather: Both extreme cold and heat can cause stress on your car battery. Heat causes the liquid within the battery to evaporate whereas cold weather causes the battery to lose its charge.
  • Jump-Starting: If you have to jump-start your vehicle often, this will further decrease your battery’s lifespan.
How To Test A Battery

How to Test a Battery

When you bring your Toyota into Groove Toyota for routine maintenance, our service technicians will complete a multi-point inspection which includes testing your battery. Schedule an appointment if you’d like to have your battery tested between regular maintenance. If you would rather test your battery at home, follow the simple steps below:

  • Start the engine, turn on the headlights and keep your car in park.
  • Press the accelerator and examine the headlights to see if they change in brightness.
  • If the brightness increases when you press the accelerator, the battery current isn’t strong enough to support the engine idling and your light levels.
  • If the lights are brightening, bring your Toyota to Groove Toyota to have your vehicle properly assessed.

The lifespan will depend on a variety of factors, on average a battery can last three to five years depending on usage and climate conditions.
